With the power of social media, today every citizen is a reporter…and every citizen (and media outlet) has the power to severely damage your reputation. What seemed a small and slightly heated conversation today can ultimately end up on the national news by six o’clock tomorrow.

Avoid becoming the next media crisis! Join Melanie Goetz to explore the dirty tricks of the media (and would be reporters) and how to best mitigate and avoid these all together.

In this presentation we’ll explore the interview basics, as well as the typical media tricks and common interviewee pitfalls. Within this discussion, we’ll explore the verbal and non-verbal techniques to communicate your message clearly and concisely and how you can effectively control the conversation through transitional phrases keeping you “on message”. Additionally, Goetz will discuss how to steer clear of problematic and contentious questions, how to respond to dangerous questions that can’t be avoided, and how to prevent your comments from being taken out of context.

The goal of this talk is to help you learn how to minimize any potential negative impacts on your organization before they arise. Listen. Take notes. Ask questions. And walk away with the tools and techniques to handle a variety of communication situations that will help you avoid becoming the next media crisis.
