COURSE DESCRIPTION

Is your rainwater management design effective? Join Paul Crabtree to discuss how rainwater management based on good urban design principles can help to harmonize urban man and nature.

Effective rainwater management requires a focus on the harmonization of man and nature AND the skill sets of several environmental and planning professionals (e.g., engineers, hydrologists, urban planners, landscape architects, public works officials, politicians, attorneys, environmentalists, and citizens). Too often, the reverse is true. The result – ineffective rainwater management plans, increased maintenance costs, and ultimately, redesign.

Join Paul Crabree to discuss rainwater management design that is closely connected with and based on good urban design principles, harmonizing man and nature and resulting in an effective and successful long-term rainwater management program. This webcast will cover the following principles of rainwater management and urban design:

  1. There are Principles of Green Infrastructure to help guide the design of BMPs.
  2. Settlement patterns matter.
  3. All scales are important - from watershed to region to community to neighborhood to block to site.
  4. Per/Acre AND Per/Capita impacts should be considered.
  5. Context-Sensitive Design and Regulations harmonize with good urban design.
  6. Community-Based (Shared) BMPs are key tools.
  7. Hydrology Science should be prioritized over Negotiated Settlements.
  8. Exemptions from regulations can unfairly move the burden, and result in compromised solutions. (There’s nowhere to hide.)

Goals:
To illustrate the importance of integrating rainwater BMP designs with good urban planning. To provide case studies of holistic rainwater management design.

  • Understanding of some key principles and tools of good urban design
  • Good urban planning itself can be a rainwater best management practice.
  • Combining green infrastructure with good urban planning can result in extraordinary solutions.
