Foundation Flood Vent Technology - Weathering the Storm and Improving Building Sustainability, Durability, and Performance

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Protect your buildings and homes! Join Gary H. Hall, PE to explore the importance and key installation elements of foundation flood vents complying with the Building Codes and FEMA Regulations, and how they can effectively prevent major damage to buildings due to flooding improving building sustainability, durability, and performance long-term.

This course will review applicable codes pertaining to foundation flood venting, including a complete review of FEMA’s Technical Bulletin 1. At the completion of this course, participants will gain a thorough understanding of the difference between non-engineered openings and engineered openings, as well as the important role they play in designing a sustainable structure.

Flood vent technology is required by FEMA and the NFIP in structuring their rates for building in flood zones, including retrofit projects to reduce insurance rates. The course is to introduce a technology to be included in specifications and codes to provide a more sustainable building.

Learning Objectives 
Attendees can expect the discussion and education of the following learning objectives:

  • Identify the effects of hydrostatic pressure on building sustainability.
  • Explain the role of foundation flood vents on building enclosure performance in relationship to air, water, and land use.
  • Identify FEMA regulations and ICC building codes as the relate to sustaining foundations in flood hazard areas.
  • Analyze the differences between engineered and non-engineered foundation flood openings in terms of optimizing health, durability, and maintenance.

* Presentations are scheduled for approximately one hour with a 15-20 minute question and answer session to follow. Presentation may exceed scheduled time. 
* Each state and certification agency has different requirements; it is your responsibility to know what they are. Note that 1 PDH = 0.1 CEU.
