Financial Approaches to Realizing and Maximizing the Benefits of Green Infrastructure

Capitalize on green infrastructure’s economic opportunities! Join Jeffrey Odefey to explore how to successfully identify and integrate the economic value of green infrastructure benefits into stormwater policy and project decision making. Within this discussion, we’ll quantify the economic benefits, identify areas with maximum cost-to-value benefits, and examine emerging financing tools that can better engage the private sector, enable economic opportunities, and reduce budget demands.

The ability for stormwater management to quantify the proven cost advantages and economic benefits of green infrastructure during the decision-making process is invaluable. This presentation provides participants with a better understanding of the economic implications of implementing green infrastructure on a site or community-wide level, including both the relative costs of green infrastructure stormwater management approaches and the associated economic benefits.

Join Odefey as he builds on current efforts to quantify the economic value of benefits associated with green infrastructure and improved stormwater management. Based on the collaborative report “Banking on Green,” Odefey will identify four areas in which green infrastructure economic benefits offer value to individual developments and communities, and will examine available tools for quantifying these benefits at a local level. Odefey will also explore emerging municipal programs with the focus of fairly apportioning/allocating the costs of stormwater management, and the economic implications of these programs.

Learning Objectives
Attendees can expect the discussion and education of the following learning objectives:

  • Practical knowledge of the economic value of the benefits provided by green infrastructure and improved stormwater management. Particular attention will be paid to four categories of benefits that have significant importance at the site and community level
  • Familiarity with and access to currently available tools for quantifying the economic value of benefits associated with green infrastructure, and discussion of how these tools can inform local decision making processes
  • Improved awareness of emerging municipal efforts to revise the way in which local stormwater management is financed through improved stormwater fee and credit programs
  • Introduction to the policies and programs that increase private sector roles in providing municipal stormwater management and potentially benefit local economies

* Presentations are scheduled for approximately one hour with a 15-20 minute question and answer session to follow. Presentation may exceed scheduled time.
