Nutrient Sources and Transformations - How to Optimize Nutrient Removal in SCMs


While nitrogen and phosphorus are a major concern in many watersheds in the US, most Stormwater Control Measures (SCMs) are not effective in removing nitrogen and phosphorus from runoff. Join Bill Lucas to explore how to select and design SCMs to improve nitrogen and phosphorus retention. After an overview of nitrogen and phosphorous forms, sources, and transformations, Lucas will discuss how nitrogen and phosphorus transformations can be optimized in SCMs; how to select and design SCMs for settings; and how to tailor these programs to meet TMDL requirements more cost effectively.

Thanks to SCMs being inefficient in removing nitrogen and phosphorous from runoff, dead zones like that illustrated by the photo (courtesy of NASA, via NASA Mississippi Dead Zone) are all too prevalent. As noted by the reds and oranges (representing high concentrations of phytoplankton and river sediment), summertime satellite observations of ocean color from MODIS/Aqua show highly turbid waters which may include large blooms of phytoplankton extending from the mouth of the Mississippi River all the way to the Texas coast. When these blooms die and sink to the bottom, bacterial decomposition strips oxygen from the surrounding water, creating an environment very difficult for marine life to survive in. Proper SCM selection and design is essential to the minimization of these dead zones, and the sustainability of the environment. While often agricultural in origin as in this case, urban runoff poses a similar threat, and is now subject to very stringent TMDL’s to reduce nutrient loads.
