What Do You Know About Those BMPs You Specified in Your Sediment and Erosion Control Plan?

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Unfortunately, development of sediment and erosion control (S&EC) plans has become more of a “cookbook” exercise rather than a professional assessment. Today, designers incorporate “approved” regulatory details in their plans with little regard to whether they will serve as Best Management Practices (BMPs) to protect the environment. As a result, reviewers concentrate on approving plans that meet checklist requirements instead of assessing if proposed BMPs are appropriate.

When failure of a mitigation method occurs due to runoff events, inspectors tend to assign blame to contractors. Yet, S&EC methods rarely fail in and of themselves! Instead, failure is most often the result of designers and reviewers not understanding how selected BMPs function and not recognizing their inherent limitations.

To minimize sediment discharges and erosion, designers and reviewers should always ask questions about the more commonly found construction site mitigation methods that are specified. Such questions could be as simple as:

  • When are silt fence barriers preferred over fiber roll/log barriers?
  • Do fiber rolls/logs provide an inexpensive method to minimize erosion?
  • Are check structures used to minimize sediment discharges or erosion?
  • What is meant by “inlet protection” and are the methods always effective in removing sediment from runoff waters?
  • What are important parameters for an effective sediment pond/trap?
  • What do I need to know about stabilizing hillsides and/or small drainage channels with RECPs?

Join Forester University for this live, educational webinar as returning speaker Jerald S. Fifield (Ph.D., CISEC, HydroDynamics Incorporated) provides a technical and practical assessment of answers to these and other questions about BMPs frequently specified in S&EC plans.

Learning Objectives
By participating in this webinar, attendees will:

  • Designers: Receive assistance in selecting practical and effective BMPs for construction sites
  • Reviewers: Be encouraged to include more technical assessments of BMP usage
  • Contractors: Obtain guidance on BMPs that can reduce maintenance costs
  • All: Learn about important BMP limitations
