Grey to Green to Smart: The Next Generation of Urban Stormwater Management

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The 21st century has brought about the unique challenge of contending with dilapidated grey infrastructure and its inability to effectively manage volume stormwater in urban settings throughout the United States. However, upon breaking down the basics of stormwater management in an urban environment, it’s simple to see why we have these issues and that this problem starts with the general limitations of combined sewers and/or grey infrastructure.

Namely, volume storage capacity is a key obstacle for both combined sewer systems and undersized separated systems. While massive webs of tunnels and pipes are the main conduit for managing stormwater in large urban areas, they can only hold so many gallons before they fill and overflow. Furthermore, grey infrastructure is static to the time it was constructed—for example, a system built in 1900 for a population of 100,000 people cannot service a population of 200,000 individuals in 2019.

The costs associated with the maintenance and upkeep of crumbling grey infrastructure are alone forcing sewage districts from around the country to entertain alternatives, such as the integration of green and smart technologies.
