Understanding the Use of RECPs

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Erosion control blankets (ECBs) and turf reinforcement mats (TRMs) are an integral part of an effective sediment and erosion control plan...but they’re not one size fits all.

Choose the right rolled erosion control product (RECP) for your next project! Join Forester University for this live educational webinar as best-selling author and returning speaker Jerald Fifield, Ph.D., CISEC, discusses important considerations for selecting RECPs for use on hillsides or in drainage channels.

This course will detail key commonalities, differences, and applications of ECBs and TRMs to help you pick the most efficient and cost-effective options to minimize hillside erosion and stabilize drainage channels. It will highlight why it is important to assess the technical characteristics of materials—such as tensile strength and shear stress—and know why all products are not equal in providing erosion protection. Fifield will offer tips on how to install and inspect ECBs or TRMs to prevent failures due to rainfall events or flows in drainage channels and give an example of calculating shear stress for design flows in order to ensure the best selection of an RECP TRM for channel protection.

Attendees will also learn about the Erosion Control Technology Council (ECTC) and explore how its website can assist designers and reviewers with ECB and TRM decisions.

Learning Objectives
Attendees can expect the discussion and education of the following:

  • Understand the differences between ECBs and TRMs
  • Become familiar with assessing shear stress for selecting TRMs
  • Learn where to find technical data on RECPs
  • Identify limitations on RECPs to minimize erosion due to rainfall and channel flows
