Streambank Protection Design: Hard & Soft Techniques & Application

COURSE DESCRIPTION

When restoring and protecting the banks of your streams, lakes, excavated channels, etc., there are plenty of vegetative plantings, soil bioengineering, and structural systems to choose from. The challenge comes in what to use when, where, and how.

Join returning speaker Dr. David T. Williams to explore the “hard and soft” designs, applications, and techniques for streambank protection, and how you can best select and apply these to your projects.

In this online training webinar, we’ll start with a discussion of streambank erosion, its contributing factors, and key considerations. Williams will then walk us through the available “hard” and “soft” streambank protection techniques and solutions (including their design, key elements, and applications), and how you can determine and select the best bank protection solution for your project. Within this discussion we’ll outline the applicable hydrology, hydraulics, soil equations and considerations, and how to incorporate these in your solution selection. We’ll also take a look at design and installation best practices, and how you can combine “hard” and “soft” techniques for maximum protection and an enhanced habitat. And finally, we’ll explore streambank protection solution maintenance and performance assessment.

Topics we’re covering include:

  • Grade stabilization
  • Flow changing techniques
  • Soil bioengineering
  • Large woody material for habitat and bank protection
  • Streambank armor protection with riprap structures
  • Articulating concrete block revetment systems
  • Vegetated rock walls
  • Stream habitat enhancement using LUNKERS
  • Gully stabilization
  • Small bridge abutments
  • Sheet pile walls in stream restoration and stabilization
  • Streambank stabilization setback sizing.

Learning Objectives
Attendees can expect the discussion and education of the following learning objectives.

  • Learn the hard and soft designs, applications, and techniques for streambank protection, and how to apply them to your projects.
  • Learn how to use hydrology, hydraulics, and soils to select the best bank protection solution.
  • Understand the three riparian buffer zones and their impact on streambank protection
  • Learn how to integrate soil bioengineering with traditional “hard” techniques.
  • Learn how to apply streambank protection methods to enhance habitat.
