Waste 2-for-1 Special: Efficient Waste Diversion

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course 1 - Optimizing Waste Diversion

We all want to reduce our waste, but how much can we really accomplish? And for large organizations (municipalities, universities, military bases, etc.) with high and visible diversion goals, how much can we accomplish WITHOUT breaking the bank?

Join Alan Housley to explore waste diversion and its available technologies, and how you can design, measure, and implement your waste diversion programs to meet your diversion goals, meet your CO2/GHG reduction goals, AND reduce your operating costs.

In this online training webinar, we’ll open with a look at “zero waste”, its technologies, its challenges, and the opportunities that exist for you and your organization (with a special look at large organizations, including: municipalities, universities, and military bases). Within this discussion, Housley will outline the best practices for designing and implementing your diversion program, as well as how to best measure your diversion results to meet your diversion and CO2/GHG reduction goals. Housley will also detail available technology (e.g., on-board truck scales, GPS devices, load management software, etc.) and how you can implement it to lower operational and capital costs in your organization. Finally, Housley will present real-world examples of large organizations that have implemented successful waste diversion programs and how you can too.

If you are responsible for sustainability programs at your institution, municipality, university, or military base this webinar is for you!

Learning Objectives
Attendees can expect the discussion and education of the following learning objectives.

  • Understand the importance of sustainability initiatives for municipalities, military bases, and universities to reduce costs, reduce resources, reduce greenhouses gases, reduce landfill space, and increase jobs.
  • Learn why timely and accurate waste diversion data is crucial for environmental sustainability and waste diversion programs.
  • Gain real-world examples of how organizations have implemented recycling mandates to optimize their waste diversion and how you can to.
  • Learn how to implement software automation within your current waste diversion program to increase accuracy and reduce time.

Course 2 - Applying Process Improvement to Waste Diversion

Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), compost facilities, and other waste diversion operations are essentially factories. In fact, because materials pass through multiple, repetitive steps, diversion and recycling operations have the closest ties to the typical factory…and with process improvement tools and techniques and opportunities.

Join Neal Bolton for the fourth session in our 4-session Process Improvement for Solid Waste Facilities Master Class Series exploring how you can implement process improvement and its tools within your waste diversion operations (e.g., recycling, green waste processing, composting, MRFs, etc.) to optimize your operations, efficiency, flow, and savings.

In this online training webinar, we’ll take a look at recycling facilities (simple, voluntary drop-offs to complex automated MRFs), their activities, their natural integration with systems like Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing, and the many opportunities within these for process improvement and savings. Additionally we’ll examine organics processing facilities (waste facilities and stand-alone), their multi-step and labor intensive activities (e.g., chipping, grinding, mulching, composting, etc.), the associated equipment and tasks (e.g., loaders, grinders, trommels, windrow turners, etc.), and the opportunities for process improvement (e.g., reduced material handling, etc.). Within both these discussions we’ll also explore how you can design a mass diagram to identify waste flow and optimize diversion operations by targeting high-priority materials.

Learning Objectives
Attendees can expect the discussion and education of the following learning objectives.

  • Understand the Theory of Constraints in regards to material flow
  • Learn how process improvement can improve diversion operations
  • Understand mass diagrams and how it can identify waste flow at a MRF or organics processing facility
  • Learn how to optimize diversion operations by targeting high-priority materials
