In this online training webinar, we’ll explore how every part of a landfill’s operation (e.g., processing, land development, cover, airspace utilization, etc.) has a specific cost and production rate, and how you can use process improvement tools to map out each activity, model your entire operational system, and evaluate what’s working and what’s not. Additionally, we’ll examine how by selecting the best process improvement techniques and tools for your operations, you can identify the opportunities for increased efficiency and cost-savings, and implement effective solutions. Finally, we’ll examine some real-world examples of how process improvement has increased efficiency and reduced costs at several landfills.

Course 2 - Applying Process Improvement to Waste Collections

Few other activities in the waste management industry are repetitive as waste collection and transfer. Think about it: a single automated residential route truck may make 1,000 lifts per day. That’s a quarter of a million lifts every year! By applying process improvement techniques to your waste collection and transfer operations, you can easily evaluate – and improve – your systems.

In this online training webinar, we’ll discuss how process improvement techniques can be effectively applied to waste collections and transfer operations. Within this discussion, we’ll explore how you can apply the process of DMAIC to evaluate your waste collection activities and equipment (e.g., routes, machinery, technology, etc.), uncover the inefficiencies, and identify solutions (e.g., route optimization, truck and arm speed, driver technique, etc.). We’ll also take a look at transfer stations (remote, unmanned container sites to large, urban facilities handling thousands of tons per day), their daily activities (receiving, handling, sorting, loading, and transporting), and the throughput of each. Applying the Theory of Constraints, we’ll examine how each of these transfer activities can act as a constraint (like a pressure regulator) limiting flow through the system, ultimately slowing the entire operation. Within this discussion, we’ll explore how you can apply process improvement techniques and establish benchmarks to evaluate and monitor your operational performance, and implement process solutions to streamline your operations and reduce your costs.
