How Will We Respond to Rising Seas?

COURSE DESCRIPTION

What do we need to do to adapt to rising seas? And...who is going to pay for it?

In the final session of our 3-part Stemming the Tide: Rising Seas and Coastal Erosion Control Master Class Series, Peter Hanrahan, CPESC, will focus on how to develop action plans and the tough questions that need to be addressed for the future of our coastal communities. For example, in coastal areas we plan to stay, we must build the necessary infrastructure. But...when do we stay and when do we make the decision to abandon? And...since future adaptation must be carefully (and timely) mapped and executed, what restrictions do we place on future development?

In essence, this online training webinar will present the need for clear, local and national actions plans that include wetland restoration, better stormwater management practices, and the reduction of CO2 impacts. Within this discussion, we’ll cover the importance of reef restoration (e.g. wave attenuation, spawning grounds, etc.) and how we can implement innovative, natural systems to provide everything from critical habitat and sediment filtrationto flow dissipation and healthy groundwater flowto cleaner and slower outflow and release of stored water.

Learning Objectives
Attendees can expect the discussion and education of the following learning objectives.

  • Develop a clear understanding of why coastal erosion inaction is not an option.
  • Create a list of actions that can make a difference locally.
  • Learn the benefits of reefs and why reef restoration is so important.
  • Examine the argument for immediate planning, and the importance of developing a national strategy to deal with sea level rise.
