Now What? Preparing for China’s Waste Ban

In 2016 nearly a quarter of America’s largest exporters were recyclers of paper, plastic, or metal, the majority of their wares headed to China. This will soon change. On July 18, 2017, China notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) that by the end of the year, it will no longer accept imports of 24 types of solid waste. How will this impact the recycling and waste management industry back home? And what opportunities are there for sustainable materials management?

Join us for a free webinar presented in a panel discussion format by the leading experts in the municipal solid waste and recycling industries, including the presidents of SWANA and ISRI, Director of Policy and Advocacy for the National Waste and Recycling Association, CalRecycle Policy Director, and a Solid Waste Contracts Attorney. The overall tenor of the discussion will be collegial rather than adversarial, exploring the likely impacts of the overseas waste ban, potential opportunities, and how we can turn the overseas waste ban into a productive situation for all parties impacted.

The moderator, Forester Media managing editor, Arturo Santiago, will kick off the webinar by laying out the basics of the overseas waste ban. Each panelist will then take turns briefly discussing and answering questions related to issues such as: the need for definitions relating to Sustainable Materials Management (i.e. what counts as recycling); the beneficiation of materials locally rather than outsourcing beyond the control of the collecting authority; and the development and standardization of materials to support local jurisdictions in their approaches to sustainable materials management. Comments and questions will be encouraged and addressed at the end of the webinar to support the national sustainable materials management conversation.
