Stormwater Inspection & Maintenance

Don’t get caught in the storm. Join Andrew J. Erickson, Ph.D., P.E., for a discussion of standardized stormwater inspection methods and performance assessment, and how to use these to select and schedule effective maintenance on stormwater treatment practices, including stormwater ponds, bioretention facilities, infiltration basins, swales, and filter strips.

While designed correctly, many stormwater treatment practices may not perform as expected due to poor construction or lack of proper maintenance. Maintenance of stormwater treatment practices is critical to preserve their function, their performance, and your investment. To date, there are few, if any, standardized inspection and assessment methods that provide the necessary linkage to construction due diligence or maintenance. Join Andrew Erickson to explore how to use standardized inspection methods developed with and for stormwater managers, engineers, and staff, and how to use these methods to select and schedule appropriate maintenance.

This Webcast presents methods which can be used on many stormwater treatment practices such as stormwater ponds, bioretention facilities, infiltration basins, as well as low impact development and green infrastructure practices. Through a discussion of pictures of successful stormwater treatment practices and those that need maintenance, Erickson will identify causes of failure and how to select the maintenance required to restore function and performance. Participants will also learn how to evaluate the inspection results to determine when maintenance should be scheduled.

Finally, this Webcast presents the realities of maintenance: actual frequency, effort, and cost of maintenance for stormwater treatment practices as reported by municipalities. Participants will explore how most municipalities conduct inspection or maintenance, the complexity of maintenance, and the cost of routine and non-routine maintenance practices with the goal of creating long-term sustainable maintenance of stormwater treatment practices.

Learning Objectives
Attendees can expect the discussion and education of the following learning objectives.

  • Inspection of stormwater treatment practices is critical for construction due diligence and proper maintenance.
  • Maintenance of stormwater treatment practices is also critical to preserve their function and performance.
  • Preventative maintenance needs to be properly selected and scheduled to prevent more costly reconstruction.
  • Maintenance costs are significant and should be considered for long-term sustainable stormwater treatment practices.

* Presentations are scheduled for approximately one hour with a 15-20 minute question and answer session to follow. Presentation may exceed scheduled time.
* Each state and certification agency has different requirements; it is your responsibility to know what they are. Note that 1 PDH = 0.1 CEU.
