Road Environmental Impacts and Mitigations


As our roadways stretch across more and more of our landscape (over 2.5 million miles of low-volume roads in the U.S. alone), the environmental impact on water quality, wildlife, and vegetation is significant. However, through Environmental Analysis and proper planning we can minimize the negative environmental impacts of roads and increase their positive impact on our environment.

Join Gordon Keller in the final session of our Roadway Erosion Control Best Practices Master Class to explore the environmental impact of our roadways, and how you can use Environmental Analysis and engineering best practices within your projects to identify possible environmental issues, evaluate viable options that satisfy user/environmental needs AND are cost-effective, and incorporate key design elements and mitigations to minimize common environmental issues and impacts along your roadways and projects.

In this presentation, we'll explore the impact—both positive and negative—that our roadways have on the environment, and how through Environmental Analysis and holistic planning, we can mitigate the negative and promote the positive impacts. Within this discussion, we'll examine the theory, elements, and applications of Environmental Analysis and how you can use it to gain a thorough view of your project's impact. We'll take a look at the design and mitigations needed to address many issues such as water quality protection, traffic safety, wildlife protection, fish passage at culverts, noxious weeds, and invasive species along road corridors. Keller will also discuss the importance of good planning and how you can apply engineering best practices to evaluate your environmental issues and viable options, and incorporate the key design elements to cost-effectively meet your project goals and mitigate your environmental impact. Finally, attendees will receive a useful set of references that address the environmental issues and mitigation measures available for roads.
